Rats, fish oil and beetroot juice could lead to health breakthroughs for aging populations
Posted on July 20th, 2011
Though rats, fish oil and beetroot juice read like ingredients in a witch’s brew, to a Kansas State University research team, information from this combination could lead to health breakthroughs for aging populations and people suffering from heart failure and diabetes.
Steven Copp, a doctoral candidate in anatomy and physiology, Manhattan, is one of the researchers in the university’s Cardiorespiratory Exercise Physiology Laboratory who’s studying the delivery and use of oxygen within the microvasculature of the skeletal muscles.
According to Copp, altered control of the peripheral blood vessels — which results from aging or diseases like diabetes and congestive heart failure — creates abnormalities in the circulatory system.

Ten global public health achievements
Posted on June 23rd, 2011
Inits Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the CDC describes “global public health achievements … that occurred outside of the United States during 2001 – 2010.” Gains in public health efforts, such as preventing child mortality, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases, have improved longevity and “resulted from improved living conditions overall, advances in medical science, and a number of population-level interventions. However, major disparities persist. During the past decade, in low-income countries, average life expectancy at birth increased from 55 to 57 years , while increasing from 78 to 80 years in high-income countries,” the article notes .

AARP Urges Congress To Reject Legislation That Could Leave Hundreds Of Thousands Without Health Coverage
Posted on May 9th, 2011
AARP today voiced its opposition to legislation that would eliminate the Medicaid Maintenance-of-Effort (MOE) requirements included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that is being considered in the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee.
The legislation, H.R.1683, could lead to the loss of vital protections for health care access for older Americans, persons with disabilities, and children, effectively allowing states to cut eligibility for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The Affordable Care Act provided the MOE provisions to serve as a bridge into 2014, making certain that important health coverage remains until the new law is fully implemented. Full Post…

Depression: take charge of your mental health
Posted on March 1st, 2011
I have been talking a lot about mental health these days. Because it is just as important to take care of yourself mentally and it is to take care of yourself physically. At work we had a presentation by a local therapist about depression. This article is adapted from her presentation. Not really an upper right? But what she said was interesting. A lot of people would not admit that they are depressed. Thoughts of shame and guilt flood their mind. While breaking your leg seems to be an acceptable ailment, depression is not. Insensitive people might say, “Get over it; it’s no big deal.” But to those who suffer from depression, it is a big deal.
Some studies say that more than 9 million Americans suffer from depression. And t
