Judge’s Ruling On Affordable Care Act Gives Green Light To Implementation

Today, Federal District Court Judge Roger Vinson ruled that implementation of the Affordable Care Act can continue while the federal government appeals his earlier decision, which declared the Act to be unconstitutional. Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers, participated in a friend-of-the-court brief supporting the law. The following is the statement of Ron Pollack, Executive Director of Families USA, about the ruling:

“Today’s ruling by Judge Vinson is a victory for common sense. Three federal judges have ruled that the Affordable Care Act is constitutional. Debate Begins On The Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act

Tonight, the House begins consideration of HR 4173, the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. This comprehensive financial regulation reform bill will enact common-sense reforms including ending bailouts by helping ensure taxpayers are never again on the hook for Wall Street’s risky behavior and bad bets; protecting families’ retirement funds, college savings, and homes and businesses’ financial futures from unnecessary risk by Wall Street lenders and speculators and high-paid corporate executives; protecting consumers from predatory lending abuses, fine print, and industry gimmicks; and finally bringing transparency and accountability to a financial system that has run amok.

Yesterday, the Administration issued a Statement of Administration Policy in strong support of the bill saying:

The Administration strongly supports House passage of H.R. 4173.

Consumers Union ‘Strongly Endorses’ Affordable Health Care For America Act

This afternoon, the Consumers Union issued a statement endorsing the Affordable Health Care For America Act:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Consumers Union, the independent, nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports, strongly endorses H.R. 3962, the “Affordable Health Care for America Act,” and urges Members of the House to vote for it without damaging amendments.

“Health care is a consumer crisis with its crippling costs, its unreliability, and lack of access for too many Americans. By creating a more secure, affordable health care system, the House bill goes a long way towards solving the crisis,” said Jim Guest, President of Consumers Union.
