How are health insurance companies experiencing higher earnings this quarter while so many industries are struggling? Health care services were way down in the 3rd quarter for 2010, helping health insurance companies report earnings which were better than expected by experts. The article on The Washington Post by Tom Murphy from November 3rd states health insurers have raised their 2010 profit forecasts because of this drop in health care.

According to the article “Popularity Rises for Pet Health Insurance” by Megan Neighbor on USAToday.com, from 2003-2007 the number of dogs, cats, and exotic animals that were covered by insurance in the US increased by 56%.
Mostly dogs were insured the most in 2008 with about 2 million insured. Cats were next with about 900,000 insured according to the American Pet Products Association. Health Savings Accounts: Five Things You Need To Know

More and more companies are switching to high-deductible plans that can be combined with tax-advantaged Health Savings Accounts to cover medical bills. Such plans usually have premiums of 10 to 40 percent less than traditional plans. Approximately 45 percent of large companies offer this option, and that’s an increase of 25 percent from 2007, according to the human resources firm Towers Watson.
To pay for health care, you can deposit pretax dollars into your Health Savings Account of up to $3,050 for individuals in 2011, or $6,150 for families, plus an extra $1,000 if you’re 55 or older. Your employer may also contribute, and any unused funds roll over year after year to earn tax-free interest. W

5 Golden Rules of Aging

What goes up but never goes down? Your age.
Over the weekend I went to a conference on aging. Yes, aging, like working with the aging population. One of the most interesting talks was about the 5 Golden Rules of Aging by Dr. Frank Yanowitz. It is more about how well you live, not how long you live.
#1: Practice a healthy lifestyle. Eat regular meals. Avoid binging by keeping your body sugar levels regular.
- Always eat a healthy breakfast. A good start to your day can help you avoid burn-out and accidents. Dr. Yanowitz even said that people who eat breakfast live longer than those who don’t. (Who knew?)
- Get enough sleep. For most, that is 7-8 hours a night. L
